The New York Jets are a currently tied for first place in the AFC East Division and for best team in New York, tied with the Buffalo Bills for both. This is a major surprise even if it’s early into the season. It was assumed by most that the Jets would have a horrible team this season and compete for the number one draft pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. NFL Analyst Daniel Jeremiah even had an NFL executive tell him that “I think the Jets might have the worst roster I’ve seen in a decade.” That executive was either exaggerating or can’t evaluate talent whatsoever, but this team has people wondering if this success will last.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Jets don’t have much firepower, but new offensive coordinator John Morton has been resourceful with the players he has. They lost top receiver Quincy Enunwa for the entire year in the preseason, but were able to trade for Jermaine Kearse from the Seattle Seahawks not too long after. Kearse has 220 yards to go with 3 receiving touchdowns, which is tied for top ten receiving TDs. Morton has used his running backs and tight ends effectively as well, giving starting quarterback Josh McCown as many options possible, who currently has the second best completion percentage with 71.4%.
Defensively, New York has been inconsistent but they have many moments where they are impressive. Their rushing defense has been poor having allowed the third most rush yards at 715. However, they’re tied for fifth in the league in interceptions with six, allowing only a 60.5 completion percentage which is the 8th best. Middle linebacker Demario Davis has been a great leader for this defense and is tied for second most total tackles with 46.
While it was nice to prove many doubters wrong, this run will likely come to an end with their tough schedule ahead. They have to play teams such as New England (twice), Atlanta, Buffalo, Carolina, Kansas City, and Denver. If the Jets want to have any chance of making the playoffs they need to improve their defense against the run and more importantly their offensive line who have allowed Josh McCown to be the seventh most sacked QB. The New York Jets have a rough road ahead, but maybe they’ll continue to shock the nation.
